Dogs experience the world through touch, from their sensitive noses to their exploring paws. Engaging their sense of touch can be a fantastic way to keep them stimulated indoors when outdoor play isn’t possible.
I’m Laura Carter, a dog trainer with a bustling household of four dogs, twin girls, and more animals than I can count! On days when walks aren’t an option, I rely on tactile enrichment to keep my dogs happy and engaged. Here’s how you can do the same.
The Importance of Touch for Dogs
Dogs use their sense of touch to explore and understand their environment. Whether it’s the feel of grass underfoot or the texture of their favourite toy, dogs are always taking in information through touch. Tactile enrichment can provide mental stimulation and comfort, especially on days when outdoor activities are limited. By engaging your dog’s sense of touch, you can help prevent boredom, reduce anxiety, and keep them mentally and emotionally balanced.
Activity: Texture Treasure Hunt
Here’s an engaging game that will stimulate your dog’s sense of touch while keeping them entertained indoors:
- Gather Textured Items: Collect a variety of items with different textures, such as a soft towel, a rubber mat, a pile of leaves, or a shaggy rug.
- Hide Treats or Toys: Place small treats or toys among these items.
- Encourage Exploration: Let your dog explore each texture with their paws, nose, and mouth as they search for the hidden treasures.
- Reward Their Finds: Offer praise or a treat each time they discover a hidden item.
This game taps into your dog’s natural curiosity, allowing them to experience different textures and use their problem-solving skills to locate the hidden treats. It’s perfect for keeping them busy and stimulated when outdoor play isn’t an option.
How Dogs Process Touch
Dogs are highly sensitive to touch, particularly in their paws and noses. By introducing a variety of textures into their environment, you can provide new sensations that engage their minds and alleviate boredom. You may even notice that your dog forms positive associations with certain textures—like how my Chihuahua, Dexter, finds comfort in soft blankets. Providing tactile experiences tailored to their preferences can help improve their mood and well-being.
Why Enrichment is Essential
Tactile enrichment isn’t just about keeping your dog entertained; it’s about enhancing their mental and emotional health. Dogs who are mentally engaged are less likely to develop problem behaviours like excessive licking or chewing, and they tend to be more content and balanced. For dogs like Dexter, tactile activities provide comfort and help them feel secure, which can be especially beneficial on days without a walk.
