About Us

Are you experiencing guilt over not providing your dog with the exercise you believe they require?
This might stem from finding walks stressful for either you or your dog, dealing with injuries or recovering from surgery, having young children at home, working shifts, or simply lacking time. As a single mother of twins who has cared for multiple dogs over the years, I can relate. For instance, my rescue dog Orla was highly anxious about the outside world, making walks challenging for both of us. Despite this, as a responsible dog owner, I often felt guilty if I couldn’t take her out.
When dogs get bored, they might bark a lot, pace around, or chew things up.

These behaviors can make the relationship between the dog and the owner worse and make the owner feel guilty and stressed. Most dogs were bred to do specific tasks like hunting or guarding. Many dogs end up in rescue centers because they show behaviors their owners couldn’t handle because the dogs weren’t getting enough mental and physical activity.

People who meet my Dalmatian, Siri, often find him surprisingly relaxed, despite the common perception that Dalmatians require a lot of attention. I don’t walk my dogs every day, but I’ve found a variety of simple activities we can enjoy at home that fit into our daily schedule. My connection with Orla, my rescue dog who struggles with reactivity, improved greatly when I swapped daily walks for calm indoor activities. The Wags without Walks club offers a range of activities tailored to different situations and limitations, ensuring you’ll never run out of ideas to keep your dog entertained when you can’t go for a walk. Connect with other owners who are in the same situation, and get help and support from me whenever you need it.
I have been working with pet dogs and owners for over 15 years and am a member of the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers as well as a Scentwork UK instructor.
Daisy, a terrier, used to run off during walks, pull on the lead, and bark at everything, making walks very stressful for both her and her owner. It took some convincing, but her owner was surprised when I suggested they try having some days without walks and instead engage in activities at home. I explained that not walking Daisy could actually be beneficial for her, as the stress hormone cortisol can stay in a dog’s system for up to 72 hours after a stressful walk. Through doing the games and activities suggested the overall relationship between Daisy and her owner dramatically improved.

Having a high energy working cocker spaniel the idea of having him on rest fills me with terror! Laura has given me plenty of tip on how to prepare my dog if he ever needs surgery or to rest. Furthermore, it details ways to stimulate my dog keep him engaged even if we can't go on big walks/runs due to injury/surgery's... which is a bonus for us both!

Laura’s style is straightforward with no jargon making the information easy to understand and apply. Not only can the tools and techniques be used for a dog in this situation, they can easily be applied to any situation where your dogs needs to be calm, confined, enriched or even just to build the bond between dog and owner. I also loved that she acknowledges the emotional strain on owners who are worried, often tired and sad for their dog who doesn’t understand why they can’t do what they are normally allowed to i.e. go on walks, climb the stairs or use the sofa.

All our dogs are rescue with varying issues at varying times, and Laura has always been so helpful and patient and gone beyond, over and above a normal structured class to help out wherever possible. Lots of it owner based issues! I cannot recommend Laura Carter highly enough and if you put in the time and effort and dedication, then Laura will more than match it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

While regular walks are typically seen as essential for responsible dog ownership, there are situations where this isn't feasible. Factors such as illness or injury affecting either the dog or the owner, the presence of anxious or reactive dogs uncomfortable with outdoor environments, households with young children, extreme weather conditions, or the need to limit exercise for young dogs due to joint concerns, can all necessitate tailored solutions.

We primarily recommend 4 different types of activities – useful tricks, enriching the 5 senses, equipment games and scent work. Each of these is designed to stimulate your dogs brain and give him a mental work out.

Laura is equipped to handle a wide range of challenges, including physical limitations affecting either the dog or the owner, as well as constraints such as limited space. While she can guide you to fit training into a busy schedule, a minimum of one hour split into smaller sessions is required for effective guidance. Laura works closely with owners to ensure they can actively participate in their dog's training process.

Laura primarily offers her services online, recognizing that for dogs on restricted exercise, getting out can be challenging and may lead to unwanted excitement. However, she also conducts a variety of in-person workshops nationwide.

Yes, Laura's training can benefit dogs with specific behavioural issues. Many behaviourists recommend a period of rest, also known as a cortisol holiday, for dogs who find the outside world intimidating, which can significantly reduce stress levels for both the dog and the owner. However, it's important to note that Laura's training does not specifically address behavioural issues, and the expertise of a behaviourist may be needed for this aspect
