Puppy and Me Training – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What age can my puppy start training?

Our Puppy and Me Training course is designed for puppies under one year old. Whether your puppy is just starting out or needs to build confidence, this course provides a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

2. When should I start training my puppy?

The earlier, the better! Puppies are most receptive to learning between 8–16 weeks old, but it’s never too late to start. Our course helps young puppies build confidence and teaches older puppies important life skills to set them up for success. Puppies can attend as soon as your vet says it is ok for them to mix with other dogs.

3. Where is the training held?

Classes take place at our exclusive training venue in Johnshaven, near Montrose, Scotland. We have private parking, a cosy indoor training barn with a wood burner and 8 acres of private woodland. Unlike noisy village halls, our quiet setting ensures your puppy can focus on you and learn without overwhelm.

4. Do the puppies get to play together?

No. This course is about building engagement between you and your puppy, not social play with other dogs. We don’t allow free play between puppies because it’s more important that you become the centre of their world. This helps improve focus, recall, and self-control in real-world situations.

5. How many puppies are in each class?

Spots are limited to just 3 puppies per course, ensuring individual attention and one-on-one support from our expert trainer, Laura.

6. What will my puppy learn?

Your puppy will develop essential life skills such as:
✔️ Focus on you in any environment
✔️ Confidence and self-control
✔️ Settling and relaxation skills

7. Is this a formal obedience class?

No! This course is about fun, reward-based learning rather than strict obedience commands. Your puppy will learn in a way that strengthens your bond while setting them up for future training success.

8. What training methods do you use?

We use positive reinforcement training, focusing on reward-based learning to build a strong bond between you and your puppy. No harsh corrections—just science-backed training that helps your puppy thrive.

9. Will this course help with biting and jumping up?

Yes! Puppies naturally bite and jump as they explore the world, but we’ll teach calmness, self-control, and appropriate behaviour using fun and effective techniques.

10. My puppy is nervous around people and new places. Is this course suitable?

Absolutely! Our calm and relaxed environment is perfect for nervous puppies. We focus on confidence-building activities to help your puppy feel safe and secure while learning.

11. My puppy pulls on the lead. Will this course help?

Yes! Although the course doesn’t actually cover loose lead walking exercises, the games and activities will teach your puppy self control and a desire to stay close to you.

12. Will this course help with recall?

Yes! One of the key skills we focus on is getting your puppy to respond to you, even with distractions. You’ll learn how to make coming back to you the best choice for your puppy.

13. Is this class suitable for all breeds?

Yes! Whether you have a small breed like a Chihuahua or a large breed like a Labrador, this course helps puppies of all breeds and temperaments learn essential skills.

14. Can my family come along to the sessions?

Yes! We encourage all household members to be involved in training, but to keep sessions calm and productive, we ask that only one or two handlers attend with the puppy.

15. Do you offer 1-2-1 puppy training?

If you prefer one-on-one training, we do offer private puppy training sessions. Contact us for more details on personalised training plans.
